Fireplace: The center of our existence

The Greatest Home Makeover Secrets in History Part 1

The Fireplace

Ever since the beginning of man existence fire has been essential for our survival, community and evolution. We gathered and told stories in front of it, we kept warm in stone houses with them, and we cooked our meals exclusively on the fire. Modern technologies have made fireplaces less essential, but at our core we are still drawn to the original wood burning fires. 60% of people prefer wood burning versus 22% prefer gas.

It is the center of our homes, our society, and our beings. It's no wonder it is the focal point of the home. When considering your home's makeover the fireplace is sure to make it to the top of the list of projects. Let's go over some secret tips that will help you with your fireplace makeover project.

1. Simply gorgeous

If you're looking for sleek and simple lines, modern or contemporary is the your style.

You can create a super-chic focal point by using cast-in-place concrete or large concrete tiles. And add fire rock glass instead of logs, or large round concrete balls for a minimalist or show-stopping look.

2. Go Bold

Hang large mirror or beautiful piece of art above the fireplace. This is your place to define your style and show off your colors you love. If you like to invest in original pieces of art, this is the location to splurge. If you have small space placing a mirror will make the room appear larger. Make sure the mirror is reflecting something beautiful and has and appropriate styled frame for your space. Of course a television can go above the fireplace in your family room.

4. Frame it

Whether you're opting for a classic or more traditional look, remember that it's all about the mantel. Consider an ornate wooden mantel to frame your fireplace, or an elegant stone mantel with legs. Limestone offers an elegant and formal look. Consult a professional such as myself to help design the framing.

6. Go Natural

Nothing says rustic and takes us back in time like a natural stacked stone. Stone veneer is also a cost-effective alternative that looks great. If your style is more "rustic cottage," consider slate. Incorporate it with stacked stone or apply it as slate tile for clean lines. Top off you rustic design with a beautiful piece of reclaimed wood to act as a mantel.
