OBJECTIVE: Create a traditional cozy home inspired by antiquities museum yet be kid and family friendly.
The home had minimal furniture since they just moved and just finished remodeling the kitchen. The homeowner is a contractor and finished their kitchen on his own. (lucky gal) They chose light maple shaker style cabinets and a grey concrete looking stone for counters. With nickel and chrome accents the kitchen could have taken this design very modern, however they wanted a more traditional mix with modern clean lines.
The living room that is connected to the dining area and kitchen has this brick fireplace above, and they wanted that to be a library and art gallery space they could sit with their friends and converse.
They wanted the family room in the adjacent room to be for tv and for their toddler to play, read and enjoy.
Natural earth textures were selected contrasted with modern mohair fabric for library chairs. Detailed accents such as brass nail heads, black iron, white coral all create a rich traditional design.
Classic art mixed with architecture and black and white photography was selected throughout.
I LOVED working on this project because this couple was so sweet and have such a beautiful family. It was really rewarding to be able to put together such a beautiful yet functional design for them.
Their small entryway was enhanced and brought to life with a beautiful grass cloth; espresso finishes mixed with walnut wood accents gave this space a rich and inviting welcome to guests. Iron wall sconces are a beautiful touch to add lighting and the personal touches of their family photos are perfectly placed.
The family TV room has more modern lines but exudes an elegant feel with classic art, wood frame chair, elegant pillows, and traditional drapes. The big cozy sectional with chaise lounge, ottomans, baskets for books and toys, and a kids corner makes this an all functional family room.
Organic elements like the wood lamp and hand knit throw mixed with custom made pillows with modern velvet texture and decorative tape add elegance to this functional family room.
A designated kids corner is the perfect way to incorporate function into beauty by keeping things organized. A bulletin board anchors the space while giving child's art a spotlight and baskets are great for storing toys and books.
The reclaimed wood mantel filled with layered classic art and artifacts with the natural red brick background transforms this space into a place you want to curl up and read a book with a glass of wine.
Custom made pillows brought in warm colors and modern interest into the space.
The silk orchid arrangement is made by my favorite vendor and is so life-like. The white platters and items were strategically placed in the curio cabinet to create crisp modern contrast.
The dining area is more modern with clean lines to transition the modern kitchen into the more traditional living space. The soft sage walls adds just enough color and contrast to the neutral palette. The glass lamp on the sideboard coordinates with the modern nickel chandelier and sconces. Faux roman shade valances add texture and softness to the French doors. And of course, a little place for some toys to keep her daughter occupied while she cooks.
I am grateful for the opportunity to help this sweet family create a home that is family friendly, beautiful and reflects their style.
